Year 2: Perfect Pizzas

May 27, 2021

This half term's topic has inspired our Year 2 pupils to be chefs, and throughout the past five weeks, the children have been selecting ingredients, taste testing and designing their own pizzas. The children got to taste a variety of breads before selecting their choice for pizza base, and then also enjoyed sampling some of the delicious toppings including spinach, sweetcorn, tomato and pepper. Who would have thought that spinach would be the topping chosen more than any other!

Following these enjoyable tasting and evaluating sessions, we then designed our pizzas following a strict criteria: our pizzas had to be healthy, tasty and colourful. This was not as easy as it sounded as our pizzas had to have a carbohydrate base to give us energy, a minimum of two vegetables for vitamins and fibre and a meat, fish or vegetarian/vegan protein for healthy skin. We also added cheese so that our pizzas had a dairy element ensuring that all parts of the ‘healthy plate’ were used.

Once their design was complete, the fun began! Adorned in their chef's hats and aprons the children got to work cutting, chopping, slicing and grating their selected ingredients. Once they were baked, the children entered the Italian restaurant to sample their perfect pizzas. Finally, we evaluated them using words such as scrumptious, delightful, yummy, great and amazing. Well done chefs! Fantastico!
