Year 1: Fairy Tale Day

To finish their Literacy work on traditional tales, Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic Fairy Tale Day. The children took part in a range of activities that included making crowns and icing biscuits. They created their own handwritten invitations and decorated place mats before they attended a grand royal banquet filled with delicious cakes and tasty treats. Thanks in large part to the fantastic costumes prepared by parents, the children (and staff) had a magical day.

Year 6: SATs Week Treat

After months of practice, perseverance and perspiration, Year 6 completed their SATs this week. We are so proud of the hard work the children have put into their learning and the hours they have spent preparing for the tests. In recognition of this and to let off some steam, our Year 6 pupils visited Hacton Park for a morning of fun with friends.

Luckily, the rain clouds held off and the children made the most of the park, enjoying the play equipment, football and basketball.

Year 5: Ancient Greek Day

Fifty-two enthusiastic young Ancient Grecians came to school dressed in wonderful outfits (thank you parents!), ready to learn more about their country, history and culture. During a packed day they learnt about the importance of Theatre to the Ancient Greeks and their use of masks to show character and emotion to the audience.

Selecting the emotion that they wanted to depict, the children made their own Greek theatre masks. They then visited a Spartan armoury where they readied themselves for battle by designing and making their own impressive shields. The Olympics was the next port of call where the children learnt about the history of the Olympic games before they created unique Olympic medals ready for the 2017 Hacton Games. A taste of life as a slave came next as they prepared and cooked up a delicious feast of flatbread, hummus, salad and honey cakes in the Greek kitchens.

Devouring their feast eagerly after a busy day of learning, the children then enjoyed some recreation: singing the Greek Alphabet and listening to a Greek myth. They rounded off the day with a quiz that highlighted just how much they had learnt about the Ancient Greeks.

Nursery: A Visit to the Baker's Shop

Hacton Nursery have been learning about The Gingerbread Man & The Little Red Hen over the last few weeks, so we thought it was the perfect time to take the children for a trip to the local bakery. The sun was shining and everyone was very excited as it was Nursery's first trip out! The children walked to the baker's shop in their key animal groups, chose a cake to buy, and ate that cake when they returned to school. The children were so well behaved and walked beautifully to the shop and back.

We talked about road safety throughout the walk and did our best to spot different numbers in the environment around us. We also focused on positional language... "down the curb.. up the curb.. past the shops.. into the train station..". We would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who joined us to help make this a very enjoyable experience for the children.

Science Club: How Objects Float

Science Club looked at how different objects were able to float. The super scientists discovered some different properties of materials and learnt how objects to float through concepts such as density, displacement and buoyancy. The challenge was to design a boat out of classroom materials that could hold as many cubes as possible. The winning design held over 100 cubes, before eventually sinking. The super scientists had great fun performing their experiment, but they did make a bit of a mess in the process!
