E for Effort

Every week, teachers recognise pupils in their class who have made an extra effort. These pupils are awarded the E for Effort cup in front of the whole school during our Friday morning assembly.

Congratulations to the wonderful children who have made an extra effort this week.

Pupil Led Assembly: Walt Disney World

Each week in our Key Stage 2 assembly, groups of children take over proceedings and share with the juniors something that interests them. From a favourite hobby to a country that’s been visited, we can talk about almost anything! We believe that giving children the opportunity to prepare an assembly, present to an audience and answer questions on their chosen topic, makes them feel valued and equips them with the skills required to share their interests and opinions with confidence.

This week we talked about... Walt Disney World.

Emily and Rachel are fans of Walt Disney World and wanted to share their enthusiasm with fellow pupils. This assembly was not sponsored by Disney!

Road Safety Awareness: Chicken!

Pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 watched an entertaining and informative Cycle and Pedestrian Safety show called 'Chicken!'. As well as learning about the importance of Road safety, children improved their awareness of the effects of peer pressure and the devastating consequences our choices can have. After the show there was an exciting, interactive workshop which enabled the children to develop their self confidence when making tricky decisions. Not only will we now be safer on the streets, we can be more assertive too!

Singing Assembly - Every Body

In Singing Assembly this week, Key Stage 2 pupils sang 'Every Body' - an uplifting song about the power of music. Even though it was the first time they had sung the song this year, they sounded so good that we had to press the record button! We hope you enjoy listening to the wonderful sound of our pupils singing this inspirational song.

Hacton 1 - 1 Langtons

The Hacton girl’s football team recently drew 1-1 against Langtons Primary School. Amy, Elsie and Megan (Year 6) have written this report:

The whistle blew. Langtons kicked off with a great start, however, not long after, Maddie tackled them. She made a long pass to Katie who ran through the defenders. Excitement invaded the pitch as Katie had a shot... sadly for Hacton the goalie made an excellent save. All was not lost as Hacton continued to fight for the ball. The whistle blew again meaning a substitution was going to be made: Elsie, Amy and Grace ran onto the pitch. Jade tried hard to defend the shots that were made but one ball rolled in making it 1-0 to Langtons. Amy and Maddie kicked off making a pass to Elsie who ran up the pitch and made a powerful shot which unfortunately did not go in. The Langtons defender stopped the ball from reaching its target, ran down the pitch and tried to score. After a brilliant Hacton save the ball found Alex, who then made a long pass to Amy. She charged up the pitch and kicked it directly at the goal. Frustratingly, it was saved. Luckily, Katie raced down the pitch to get the ball and quickly scored an excellent shot to make the final score 1-1.

Well done girls!

Key Stage 1 Maths Challenge Winner

Congratulations to the winner of our Key Stage 1 Maths Challenge: 'How many ways can you make the number 8'. We had some great answers that proved our Key Stage 1 pupils are brilliant at maths. Well done to the Year 2 pupil who wrote down lots of sums that all correctly equalled 8!

"I think I'm good at maths and I wanted to be clever. I got to go up in assembly, it made me feel happy. I won Magic Stars! I ate them all up. Mummy and Daddy said 'Fantastic!'"

Sports Award Winner

Every week, our Premier Sport coaches present a trophy to recognise progress and achievement in PE. Our year 4 pupil was delighted to receive the award for her outstanding gymnastics skills.

"When I won the cup, I felt proud and good. I go to gymnastics clubs twice a week (one after school club and one outside of school) and I work hard. I want to be a gymnastics teacher when I get older. It's a good feeling to win something. Winning the cup makes me want to work even harder to try to win it again."

Maths Challenge Winner

Congratulations to the winner of last week's Maths Challenge: 'The answer is 24 what is the question?'. As usual, we had some great responses. Well done to our Year 6 pupil who came up with a great solution using different operations that displayed her impressive command of decimal numbers: '12.75 + 27.75 - 16.50 = 24'.

"I normally do the challenge every week and I was pleased with my answer. I thought I might have a small chance of winning but I didn't think I actually would! I wasn't in assembly so my brother picked up my certificate and prize. At lunchtime, loads of people were congratulating me but I didn't know why - I was confused. After I'd had my lunch, my brother found me and told me the good news. I won a pack of Magic Stars that I ate the same day; I gave my friends one each so they didn't last long! Mum and Dad were proud of me - my dad likes maths so he was really happy that I like it too. The Maths Challenge is really fun!"

Royal Liberty School Physics Roadshow

Young ambassadors from the Royal Liberty School visited Hacton to present their Physics Roadshow. Equipped with eggs, balloons, straws, magnets, Maltesers and other weird and wonderful objects, the super scientists amazed our Year 5 pupils with their interactive experiments and technical knowledge. Our pupils were particularly fascinated to witness how centrifugal force allowed a moving Malteser to remain within a glass even when it was lifted from the desk. Year 5 certainly enjoyed the Roadshow and look forward to the next visit from the secondary school scientists.

Maths Challenge Winner

Congratulations to the first Maths Challenge winner of the spring term. The talented Year 3 mathematician used her impressive estimation skills to work out the amount of liquid in millilitres held in different containers.

"I was shocked when they called out my name in assembly. Walking up in front of everyone was quite scary - everyone was looking at me! I won some sweets and was given a certificate. When I told my mum that I'd won the Maths Challenge she said 'I'm so proud of you' and gave me a big hug."

Science Challenge Winner

Congratulations to the winner of the weekly Science Challenge. This week's challenge began with an intriguing statement: "I can tie a knot in the wire tight enough to stop the electricity getting through?"

The question was:  "Can she? What would you say and why?"

The super scientist in Year 6 used her knowledge of electricity and conductors to provide an explanation as to why the above statement was incorrect.

"I saw the challenge in the corridor and thought it looked like fun. I didn't think I would win and I was really surprised when my name was called out in assembly. I won a Snickers and a certificate. I'm definitely going to keep doing the Science Challenge."

Year 3 Archaeology

Year 3 have started this term as they mean to go on by rolling up their sleeves to begin exploring their new History topic: The Stone Age. In order to appreciate how we find out about the past, the children got stuck into finding clues that would lead to a famous person or character.

Using small digging implements, sieves, magnifying glasses and brushes (as well as their hands) they dug carefully through the sand, removing any finds, dusting them down and putting them safely into labelled evidence bags. Fun was had piecing all the information together in order to try and work out who the artefacts belonged to.

Year 3 wrote up Dig Reports to describe what they had discovered and what the evidence revealed:

“We dug the sand with the spatula to find things and when we found them we put them into evidence bags. We found a string of pearls, two jewels, gold coins, a section of the Union Flag from 1952 and glasses. We talked about the items and we think the items come from the Queen of England.” (Oliver)

“In our box we found a bandage, a hospital band, a map of Florence, a stethoscope and a Bible. We think that the evidence shows that these things belonged to Florence Nightingale.” (Joseph)

“We found a crown, scroll, fur, rubies, emeralds and a section of Greensleeves music. The artefacts were delicate. We found they belonged to King Henry VIII.” (Lucy)

The excitement of uncovering clues about the past clearly fuelled Year 3's enthusiasm for History: what will they discover next?
