Literacy Week: ‘Dear Zoo’

Too tall!

Too fast!

Too naughty!

Too stripy!

Our ‘Dear Zoo’ Literacy week was launched in West End/Masked Singer style this morning as some unwanted, life-sized creatures (and two naughty teachers) were delivered to our assembly hall! After the excited cheers and laughter had calmed down, the perfect pet eventually arrived and the children wished they could keep her……a real life puppy! She was perfect but unfortunately, Mrs Leslie still needs persuading!

We are so excited about all that this week has in store for our children. Remember our bedtime reading challenge. Why not try 'Dear Zoo' tonight or making up your own version?

Year 2: Music

Year 2 have been looking at 'Zootime' in Music this half term.

They have looked at the features of Reggae music and have learnt to sing the song to performance standard. The children have recently moved onto using glockenspiels to accompany the song and have learnt about composition.
When an original piece of music is written, this is referred to as music composing. This can refer to both vocal or instrumental music.
The children have used their knowledge of Reggae music (slow and steady using repeated patterns/ melodies) to compose their own accompaniment and trialed it out using the glockenspiels.
Well done, Year 2!

Readers' Treat: Spring Term

The Readers' Treat is finally here!

The final pieces of the puzzle have been added and the preparations are well underway! We can't wait to celebrate with our superstar readers tomorrow and Wednesday!

Each week, as part of our E for Effort assembly, we will be adding another piece of the puzzle in order to discover the exciting treat that we have in store for those children who have read three times each week at home. Don't forget to evidence this in your reading record!

Awesome Attendance Winners (w/c 21st March)

At Hacton, we have introduced a celebration of our attendance. Each week, as part of our assembly, we will announce who the Awesome Attendance winners are. They will get to have our Attendance cup for the week and will be rewarded with a treat in recognition of their fabulous attendance.

See below for last week’s figures:

TTRS Winners (w/c 21st March)

To run alongside our Times Table Journey, we have introduced Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to help our children to develop a secure understanding and quick recall of their times table and division facts.

Each week, class teachers will select a child in their class to enter the TTRS draw. At random, one child in KS1 and one child in KS2 will be chosen to win a prize.

To be in with a chance, you need to be regularly using Times Tables Rock Stars: Play (ttrockstars.com). Good luck!

Here are this week's winners!

Year 2: DT

Over the past four weeks, the children have been learning about what a balanced meal contains and discussing whether a pizza is a healthy meal. We looked at the different food types and ensured that our pizza had at least one ingredient from each section including carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, protein and dairy.

The children tasted and selected a pizza base from a variety of choices and selected their toppings following a successful and delicious taste test! They then designed their pizza making justifications for their options. This week, the day finally arrived for the children to don their chef's hats and aprons and get to work spreading, chopping and placing their toppings on their pizza. They were baked in the oven and delivered in pizza boxes.

With Italian music playing, the children enjoyed the feast. Finally, they had to evaluate their design and discuss what they would improve or change next time.

It was a wonderful morning in Year 2! Magnifico!

Year 2: Forest School

2MS had a lovely, relaxing afternoon at a very warm and sunny forest school; none of us could believe the weather compared to last week! This week the children learnt how to build a mini campfire and how to safely use a flint and steel to light it. We also made swords and 'dragon eyes' using our weaving skills.

We are very excited for our campfire next week (especially the hot chocolate and marshmallows) but disappointed that it is the last session for 2MS. We have had so much fun!

Achievements of the Week (w/c 21st March)

Congratulations to our Times Table winners this week! These pupils have hopped aboard the Times Table train to continue their journey to becoming a Times Table Champion. They have worked exceptionally hard to learn and master their multiplication and division facts.

Congratulations to our Reading and Poetry Superstrs this week! To achieve this award, all of these children have either read poems or books by their year group authors (Bronze is 5, Silver is 10 and Gold is 15). A big well done to this week's winners who have demonstrated great commitment and dedication to reading.

Our Achievements of the Week winners should be very proud of their success!

Year 2: Forest School

It was a rainy afternoon at Forest School this week but luckily, Paul Pine was on hand to build a shelter to keep us all dry! The children enjoyed using the peelers to whittle their sticks to create magic wands and talking sticks and using the drill to finish their medallions. A very squelchy mud kitchen was enjoyed by all with delicious 'hot chocolate' and 'soup' being a couple of things on the menu!

Year 2: Forest School

2MS had a wonderful time at Forest School on Wednesday. The sun shone all afternoon as the children created their medallions and used the drill under the watchful eye of Paul Pine. The mud kitchen was very popular and we saw some delicious delicacies being prepared! The children used willow to create bow and arrows and made their den from last week even bigger, adding tarpaulins in case it rained.

We can't wait for next week!

Reception: People Who Help Us

Reception have been learning about people who help us in our community.

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to have a visit from PC Edwards. He told us about the vehicles which police officers use to get around and the equipment they use too.

We were allowed to explore the different equipment such as a baton and handcuffs and he even let us try on a hat and a police jacket. PC Edwards demonstrated how the handcuffs can be used to detain someone in a pretend scenario where he arrested the teachers!

What a perfect way to bring our topic to life!

Year 1: DT

This half term in DT, Year One are becoming fruit chefs as they develop their culinary skills.

This week, the children have learnt how to hold a knife carefully and the different ways you can prepare different fruits: peeling, slicing and chopping. The children then had the opportunity to use their fabulous knowledge of adjectives to describe the texture and taste of the different fruits.

In coming weeks, the children will be using their knowledge of fruits to design their very own fruit salad.
