#WakeUpWednesday

Fake news can be false information, photos or videos purposefully created to confuse or misinform. It can also be genuine information that has been manipulated to deceive. It’s important that children learn how to distinguish between real news and fake news, so that they don’t inadvertently share something which isn’t true or believe something which could be misleading.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as embarrassment, negative influences on people’s behaviour and negative emotions.

E for Effort and WOW! Winners (w/c 22nd March)

To acknowledge pupils who have gone above and beyond in their learning each week, putting in that extra effort, each class teacher chooses one pupil to receive the E for Effort cup and certificate.

For our Early Years, at the end of every week, Reception and Nursery teachers will choose a pupil from their class to receive a special WOW! certificate for outstanding achievement. This may include working hard, excellent behaviour, being a helpful member of the class or simply being kind.

Here are this week's winners! Well done to everyone.

Reading and Poetry Superst★rs (w/c 22nd March)

Congratulations to our Reading and Poetry Superst★rs this week! To achieve this award, all of these children have either read poems or books by their year group authors (Bronze is 5, Silver is 10 and Gold is 15). A big well done to this week's winners who have demonstrated great commitment and dedication to reading. Our new Reading and Poetry Superst★rs should be very proud of their achievement!

Times Tables Superstars (w/c 22nd March)

These pupils have hopped aboard the Times Table train to continue their journey to becoming a Times Table Champion. They have worked exceptionally hard to learn and master their multiplication and division facts. Well Done!

Year 6 Science: The Digestive System

Year 6 enjoyed learning about the digestive system this week. They had the chance to draw around a human body, draw the organs involved in the digestive system and the important roles they play. The children were absolutely shocked to learn and see that the small intestines are a whopping 6.5m long compared to the large intestines that is only 1.5m long. Other key information they learnt included how it takes 24 hours for our body to digest food; the digestive system from start to finish is 9m long and that it only takes 7 seconds for food to travel from our mouth, down our oesophagus and into our stomach!

It was great to see children identifying where some of our organs are and listening to them explain the organs each play in helping our body digest food and ensure we have all the nutrients we need from the different food.

Well done Year 6!

#WakeUpWednesday

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging service, with around two billion users exchanging texts, photos, videos and documents, and making voice and video calls. The app offers end-to-end encryption, meaning messages can only be read by the sender and the recipient(s). Not even WhatsApp can read them. Updates to its privacy policy in 2021 reportedly caused millions of users to leave the app. But the new policy was widely misinterpreted: it only related to WhatsApp’s business features, not to personal messages.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as stranger danger, live location sharing and disappearing messages.

P-HIC Science: Bouncing Eggs

What came first the rubber chicken or the rubber egg?

How to Make an Egg Bounce!

Year 1 and 2 PHIC children enjoyed investigating what happens to an egg when it is left in vinegar. The children monitored the reaction that the acid created on the shell of the egg. They observed bubbling, expanding and dissolving.  After 24 hours, the shell had fully dissolved leaving the egg translucent allowing a torch to shine light through it.  The only part remaining was the membrane which made the egg bounce! The children managed to bounce the egg from a height of 50 cm before our experiment ended in a splat!

Year 3 Science: Joints and Movement

Last week in Science, Year 3 learnt all about why joints in our bodies are needed for movement to occur. Firstly, we learnt about the 3 types of joints: ball and socket, hinge and gliding. We located where we would find these in our bodies. After this, we recreated our arms including the 3 different joints.

Step 1: We started with the shoulder, a ball and socket joint.

Step 2: Then we moved down the arm to our upper arm and forearm, a hinge joint.

Step 3: Lastly, moving down the arm to our wrist, a gliding joint.

The children had great fun getting creative and applying their Scientific knowledge to a practical task. We hope you enjoy looking at the pictures of some of the children proudly holding their final recreated arm!

Red Nose Day 2021 @ Hacton

On Friday 19th March, Hacton celebrated Comic Relief's Red Nose Day 2021. The school was awash with a variety of red outfits, face paint and red noses; pupils took part in a range of activities in class to celebrate this event. As a result of your generous donations, we raised over £550! Well Done Team Hacton :)

Year 6 English: Horrifying Howlers

Year 6 have worked extremely hard over the last two weeks to complete a piece of writing based on Harry Potter, more specifically the howler scene. The piece started with setting the scene (in the Great Hall) and then moved on to describe the owl's arrival, the mail being delivered and Ron's misfortune of receiving a howler. Through watching short clips from the film and sharing their ideas, the children have developed their use of descriptive language, used a range of openers, and tried to use a wide range of punctuation. Some of the pieces could definitely be published - they are that good!

As a treat for their hard work, the children had the opportunity to create their own howlers with ferocious looking teeth and snake like tongues.

Well done Year 6.

Year 5: Science

Year 5 enjoyed working with different solutions to see the rate at which sugar dissolved. As a group, they decided on their variables. Whether they chose to change the temperature of the water, type of liquid, type of sugar or amount. They planned their own experiment and worked as a team to observe how long it took for the sugar to dissolve. We used many keywords including solution, saturation and sediment. They wrote up their experiments and concluded that granulated sugar dissolved the quickest in standard water but took longer in the oil.

Here are some pictures of our investigation:

E for Effort and WOW! Winners

To acknowledge pupils who have gone above and beyond in their learning each week, putting in that extra effort, each class teacher chooses one pupil to receive the E for Effort cup and certificate.

Here are this week’s winners. Well done to you all!

We're introducing a new way to celebrate achievements in the Early Years classes.

At the end of every week, Reception and Nursery teachers will choose a pupil from each class to receive a special WOW! certificate for outstanding achievement. This may include working hard, excellent behaviour, being a helpful member of the class or simply being kind.

Here are this week's winners! Well done to everyone.

Nature Detectives Competition Winners

Over Lockdown, as part of Hacton at Home Plus, Mrs Redwood and Mrs Caston created a Nature Detectives competition. You had to answer 20 multiple choice questions about different activities that had been uploaded to test your scientific knowledge. Our winners (below) got the highest score and won a fantastic new book! Congratulations :)

Year 6: Wonderful Water Cycles

We have been absolutely amazed this week at the work the Year 6 pupils put into creating their water cycle dioramas that they created in their final week of online learning. Using a range of recyclable materials, the children have managed to show the stages of the water cycle.

The attention to detail on the children's dioramas shows their clear understanding of the cycle: they have all been beautifully presented and clearly labelled.

P-HIC Junior: Science

This week we conducted an experiment to show how our eyes need to work together to do simple tasks.

The class predicted that:

·         if they could see with 2 eyes they would all be able to pin the tail on the donkey.

·         If they could see with 1 eye they might not be able to pin the tail on the donkey.

·         If they covered their eyes completely, they would struggle to pin the tail on the donkey.

We had a lot of fun seeing if their predictions were true, although Mrs Norford ended up with a few on her nose as she was joining the classroom virtually!!!!

Year 5: Art

In Art this week, Year 5 looked at how artists create reflections of cityscapes on water using different materials. Then, using water colours, we explored ourselves how this could be done using different painting techniques. After trialling the different techniques, we used what we had learned to have a go at creating reflections of different buildings and the results were fantastic!

We cannot wait to continue looking at our topic of cityscapes before creating our final piece of artwork.

Welcome Back Hacton!

Finally, after 9 weeks of Hacton at Home, our Hacton community has been reunited. The school has been filled with huge smiley faces and a constant buzz of excitement as we all settle back into our routines.

Here are a few pictures of the first week back:
