E for Effort

Every week, teachers recognise pupils in their class who have made an extra effort. These pupils are presented with the E for Effort cup during our whole school assembly.

Congratulations to all of the wonderful children who made an extra effort this week.

Year 4 Music: Notation

Year 4 have recently started their new recorder course with Miss Vlasic. To begin, they focused on the note B. They learnt to read it on the stave and the fingers needed to sound the note. Before the first puff into the recorder, they practised clapping the tune, thinking about crotchets, minims and rests in preparation for their first attempt. When they had mastered the song, they practised drawing staves and writing crotchets and minims using only the note B carefully placed it on the 3rd line of the stave. Well done Year 4 for making impressive progress playing the recorder and understanding notation.

Year 6: Antarctica Presentations

To learn about Antarctica in more depth, Year 6 watched David Attenborough's 'Frozen Planet' and made notes about its climate, landscape and the animals that live there. They then researched the people who live there. The following lesson, they consolidated their learning by working in groups to prepare a presentation to share with their classmates.

Along with developing their confidence and presentation skills, Year 6 demonstrated their depth of understanding about the harsh climate and landscape of Antarctica.

Year 5: Science Museum

Year 5 spent a fun-filled day at the Science Museum. After a long but easy journey on the District line, they made their way into the magnificent museum. The children marvelled at the historical space exhibits that included a full-sized lunar lander.

After a morning exploring the exhibits on the ground floor, they took full advantage of the live demonstrations and intriguing interactive displays in the Wonderlab. Our Year 5 pupils had a superb day full of facts and fun that perfectly complemented their science work in the classroom.

Congratulations to all of the wonderful children who made an extra effort last week.

Year 2 Literacy: Fairy Tales

Year 2 have been exploring different Fairy Tales. After investigating the language used, they wrote their own version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but with a unique twist. Instead of porridge, our characters tucked into bowls of vegetable soup! To help with selecting exciting adjectives, the children experienced walking into the Bear's house and tasting the 3 varieties of soup that Goldilocks had on offer. Year 2 demonstrated an impressive knowledge of adjectives and phrases in their work. They thoroughly enjoyed experiencing and describing what it would have been like for Goldilocks.

Year 1 History: Victorian Toys

In their History lessons, Year 1 have been studying toys from the past. The children had a Victorian visitor: the toy-factory owner Mrs Pollock. She taught our pupils about the difficulties faced by poor children in Victorian times through a range of activities. Mrs Pollock explained the jobs the children would have to do when they were employed in a factory.

Wearing straw boaters and flat caps, Year 1 used drama and traditional songs to act out various jobs before they played with Victorian toys. When Mrs Pollock left, they made old peg dolls and paper dolls just like the ones children played with 100 years ago.

Year 1 gained a rich understanding of old toys and an appreciation of the challenges faced by children in Victorian times.

Year 1 Science: Hibernation

Year 1 have been learning about different animals and what happens to them in winter. They were excited to build hibernation sites for hedgehogs and dormice. The children produced some fantastic sites using twigs, sticks and leaves to create a secure, sheltered home for animals to enjoy in the winter months.

Year 6: Macbeth Workshop

To complete their study of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Year 6 participated in an all-day workshop with John from Splats Entertainment.

The children were sorted into four groups, with each group challenged to learn a different part of the play. With roles allocated and props distributed, Year 6 began learning their lines and rehearsing their scenes with the expert guidance of the workshop director. At the same time, some groups created props. To conclude the workshop, Year 3 joined Year 6 as an appreciative audience for the dramatic final show.

With just a day to learn and rehearse their scenes, it was wonderful to witness the impressive performance of Year 6 as they conveyed the tragedy of Macbeth.

Year 5: Planetarium Visit

Year 5 braved the dreary weather, busy commuter trains and a very steep hill to visit the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. First on the schedule was a wonderfully immersive show at the planetarium. Then, they had the opportunity to explore the interactive rooms, stepping back in time to learn about the history of astronomy and space exploration. The children touched one of the oldest objects in the world: a 4.5 billion-year-old meteorite formed around the same time as the Earth and the Sun. To round off the day, Year 5 climbed up to the top of the observatory to see the large equatorial telescope. The children all agreed that their visit to the  Royal Observatory was out of this world!

Year 2 History: Making Bread

Year 2 have just started their new History topic on The Great Fire of London. To understand how the fire started, the children put themselves in the shoes of the baker Thomas Farriner. His bakery in Pudding Lane was Great Fire of London on 2 September 1666

The children began by carefully measuring out the correct ingredients. They then kneaded the dough, allowed it to rise and shaped it. Year 2 developed a good understanding of how Thomas Farriner made bread and they also started to make comparisons with bread making today.
