Year 2: Science Club

Mrs. Stephenson was excited to be leading a science club for our budding scientists in Year 2. Our theme for our CREST award this week was bubbles! The children were read a story in which the character said, 'that all bubbles were the same shape and size.' The children were then given trays of bubble mixture and a wide range of bubble wands of differing shapes and sizes.

The mission for our scientists was to investigate how to make different shaped bubbles. This was great fun and conclusions were made including 'it depends how quickly you move the wand. If you move it fast, then you will get smaller bubbles.' One scientist said, 'if you blow gently then you will get bigger bubbles.' Some excellent conclusions were made and lots of bubbly fun was had by all!

If you are at home and want to try out the investigation, then do so and test our ideas! Happy experimenting!

Year 2: Maths Club

Year 2 Maths Club have had a puzzling time! The children were presented with sudoku puzzles to complete that increased in difficulty. The marvellous mathletes were up for the challenge and showed determination to succeed and resilience to complete each board. Well done!

Year 5: PSHE

Today in PSHE we discussed how we sometimes experience uncomfortable feelings in our daily lives and explored how we can manage them. For example, having a chat with a friend or listening to some music. We talked about how it is normal to have these feelings and realised that how one person manages these feelings may be different to what works for another person, so it is important to find the thing that works for you.

Year 2: 'Starry Night' Paintings

Over the past two weeks, Year 2 have been reading, writing, and creating work on the book 'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers.

As a finale for the topic, the children were introduced to the work of Vincent Van Gogh and were given the opportunity to recreate one of his famous works 'Starry Night'.
The pupils watched a 'How to draw' video first, sketching the picture before painting it. They thoroughly enjoyed this experience and have created some beautiful pieces of artwork.

You are all superstars! Well done!

Congratulations to our Reading and Poetry Superstrs this week! To achieve this award, all of these children have either read poems or books by their year group authors (Bronze is 5, Silver is 10 and Gold is 15). A big well done to this week's winners who have demonstrated great commitment and dedication to reading.

Our Achievements of the Week winners should be very proud of their success!

E for Effort Winners (w/c 20th September)

In order to reward our pupils who have gone above and beyond in their learning each week and put in extra effort, each class teacher chooses one pupil to receive the E for Effort cup and certificate.

Here are this week's winners. Well done - we are very proud of you all!

Year 6: The Blitz

This week, Year 6 have been learning about what life was like during 'The Blitz.' They have watched videos, read books, and had discussions about what the Blitz was, when it began, how long it lasted, how the Blitz affected the lives of everyone living through the war and about the English and German air force. The children had the chance to share their wealth of knowledge and develop their understanding further by creating double page, or in some cases quadruple page spreads that had key information and pictures about this horrendous time during WWII.

Year 4: Digestion

Year 4 enjoyed watching their teachers demonstrate a practical experiment which recreated the digestion process using household items such as paper cups, orange juice and a pair of tights. This demonstration enabled the children to visualise the process of digestion outside of their body and to further understand how our bodies really work.

School Council Representatives 2021

The School Council is the voice of our pupils. It aims to improve our school while ensuring all decision making is fair and democratic. They have the responsibility of listening to their peers and ensuring that everyone's opinions and views are heard and discussed. Our School Council members are looking forward to an exciting year of discussion, decision-making and democracy.

Hacton's House and Vice House Captains 2021

Cheers erupted during Friday's E for Effort assembly as we shared the names of our new House Captains and Vice House Captains. Bravely, many children put themselves forward to be considered for the role during our election process last week. With wise words and persuasive presentations, our Year 6 hopefuls spoke clearly and confidently and all of the children should feel incredibly proud of the presentations they created and the motivating words they shared. However, as with all elections, there had to be winners. It is our pleasure to congratulate the new House Captains and Vice House Captains who have the honour of leading their house for the year. Well done!

International Deaf Awareness Week

As part of Deaf Awareness week, Mrs Norford and some of the children from our Provision for Hearing Impaired led our whole school assembly. The children explained why they are deaf, the difficulties they have faced and helped our school community to learn some basic sign language.

During the assembly we gave some facts and figures about deafness. Did you know that 1 in 6 people in the UK are affected by hearing loss and that around 2 million people in the UK have hearing aids?

Following on from our assembly, the children from our P-HIC delivered a book to each class which will be shared as part of our daily 'drop everything and read' time.

We're very proud of the members of our provision for sharing their experiences with us and for helping our school community to become more deaf aware.

Year 1: Exploring the Five Senses

Our Year 1 children were very excited to start our new Science topic. We talked about Science being a lesson where we learn about the world around us.

Last week, we learnt about the different parts of the body, including elbows, shoulders, ankles and wrists. This week, the children have been learning about the five senses. To explore these, we went on a walk around the school playground and field to see what we could see, hear, smell and touch. The children even took a piece of fruit with them to taste!

Here are some of their ideas:
  • Touch: We could touch the grass, leaves, acorns and trees
  • See: We could see some beautiful dandelions, the blue sky and tall trees
  • Smell: We could smell our lunches cooking and the flowers
  • Hear: We could hear some birds when we listened very quietly and we could hear children talking

What a great walk Year 1 had!

#WakeUpWednesday

Now more than ever because of the ever-changing technological world that we live in, it is essential that we equip our children with the knowledge and skills to ensure that they know how to use the internet safely.

Each week we will be sharing an age-appropriate guide for parents to share with their child when having conversations about online safety, should they feel it is needed.

This week's guide is about online bullying.

Welcome to our new Elephants, Lions and Giraffes!

A big welcome to our new Elephants, Lions and Giraffes!  We are very excited for the year ahead and looking forward to getting to know more about our new children and families.

All of the children have loved exploring the resources in the classrooms and outside in the garden. It’s been lovely to see how quickly everyone has started to pick up our new rules and routines. We’ve been working hard to share resources, take turns and learn the names of our new school friends. What a great start to the year you have all had!

Year 6: Crazy Circuits

Combining both their DT and Science topics, Year 6 loved exploring about electrical circuits.  Provided with all of the necessary tools, (wires, battery packs, bulbs and a motor) they were left to explore how they could get a motor to operate in a circuit. They then had to explain how they could transfer the motion of the motor to the moving parts of a fairground ride. As part of the challenge, the children were asked to explain what happened when the voltage from the power source was changed.  Fun was had by all!

Year 1: Letter Formation

Year 1 have been recapping how to form their letters correctly as well as revising their phase 2 phonics. They have all been working very hard so as a treat, they were able to practise their letters in glitter, with playdough, with chalk and using felt tip pens!

Year 2: Bread Making

To begin our History topic on The Great Fire of London, the children in Year 2 experienced making bread rolls from scratch. They used traditional ingredients and were shown how to make the rolls by hand. They enjoyed mixing, kneading, rolling and shaping their bread dough into a design ready to be baked in the oven.

This week, the children will learn about how Thomas Farriner baked his bread for his bakery in 1666 and how this compares to modern times. They will discuss the dangers in the past and how this led to the start of the Great Fire.

This was a fun, enjoyable, tasty and engaging way to begin our History topic in Year 2. We just hope they tasted as good at home as they smelt in school!

Year 3: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

This afternoon in Year 3 was a crazy one indeed! We discussed the importance of teamwork and thought about how working well as a team will help our learning this year. To test the children's skills, they created their very own crazy golf courses. It was clear to the Year 3 teachers that the children can definitely work well together - teamwork makes the dream work! What a great start to the year 3PP, 3EM and 3NZ!

Welcome Back!

It has been smiles all round for our first day back and we're all very excited to be returning to a more 'normal' school life!
