Worldly Wise: Rockets

The whole school joined together for another exciting Worldly Wise topic: rockets. After watching some videos of huge rockets on their way into space, the forces at work were explained on a much smaller scale.

We made our very own balloon rocket to explain the forces that propel them up into the air and even push free from the pull of the earth's gravity.

Worldly Wise: Birds

The whole school joined together to expand their knowledge of things that fly with this week's focus: birds.

To provide a memorable real-world example for our pupils, a very special visitor joined our assembly. Grendel the owl displayed his wonderful wings so the children could look at their structure and their concave shape that is used to provide lift.

Thank you to Mr and Mrs Manning for bringing to school their gorgeous feathered friend.

Year 1 Maths: Understanding Fractions Using Smarties

Year 1 have been learning about halves and quarters in their Maths lessons. They talked about what a fraction is - splitting something into equal parts - and they practised finding halves and quarters of shapes. In pairs, the children then had to find halves and quarters of different amounts by sharing Smarties into two or four groups. The lesson finished with a much anticipated treat: Smarties!

Year 5 DT: Recyclable Materials

After learning about the damaging effect plastic can have on the world when it's not thrown away or recycled, Year 5 knew they had to do something. In DT, they discovered that plastic can get into our oceans and harm sea creatures so they decided to go around the school field and playground picking up litter to help prevent it from polluting our planet. When they investigated the situation around school they found that there was litter hiding all over the place. Our eager environmentalists collected a whole box and bin bag full.

Year 5 would like to encourage everyone in school and beyond to recycle whenever they can. If this isn't possible, please make sure that litter goes in a bin so that it can be disposed of properly. Spread the word to your family and friends!

Red Nose Day 2019

Red Nose Day was a brilliant 'fun raising' day at school with our pupils excited to be dressed in red to raise money for Comic Relief. Red noses, brightly coloured outfits, deely boppers and painted faces could be found in every classroom. Assembly had a Red Nose Day theme with children learning about the important work of Comic Relief. Thank you to parents, pupils and staff for your support. At the last count, we had raised over £450.

Year 4 Music: 'Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy'

In their music lessons this term, our year 4 pupils have been learning the recorder. Children have developed their confidence in how to follow notation and play in time.

Firstly, the tuneful children learnt to hold their recorders properly and play the notes B, A, G and E. Each week, they practised short songs that introduced a new note until they could play a song that combined all four notes. Year 4 were proud to perform and record the culmination of their hard work: 'Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy'.

"It has been brilliant to learn a new skill and lots of different notes on the recorder"

"I have learnt a lot during the last term in Music lessons and all of these things I would have never been able to do without these lessons!"

"I found the notes G and E a challenge... and especially E because you need to use five fingers and both hands and cover all holes to stop the air coming out and make a horrible sound!"

Year 5 and 6: Understanding Crime

You and Me counselling service delivered an important assembly to pupils in years 5 and 6 to highlight issues related to crime. The talk centred around different types of crime and the age of criminal responsibility. Children were also made aware of online crimes such as malicious communication, different examples of knife crime and the punishments associated with these, as well as how to stay safe.

Reception: Pancake Day

Children in Reception discussed the meaning of Shrove Tuesday and why it is widely celebrated. To mark this significant day, each Reception class made pancakes throughout the week. Elephant class made pancakes on Tuesday, Lion class made pancakes on Wednesday and Giraffe class made pancakes on Thursday.

The children were very excited to head upstairs to the cookery room in small groups to make their own pancakes. Everyone had a go at mixing the ingredients and some children even managed to successfully flip a pancake or two, although some pancakes did end up on the floor - whoops!

The pancakes were carried carefully downstairs to Reception classrooms where the children discussed the difference between healthy and unhealthy toppings. They chose what to put on their pancakes and merrily wolfed them down. The children all agreed that food tastes so much better when you've made it yourself.

Year 6 DT: Antarctica

During the spring term, Year 6 learnt about Antarctica. In keeping with the theme of the term, the children used their DT skills to design, create and evaluate an Antarctic animal: a penguin! They had to measure and cut several pieces of felt and sew them together. There were plenty of opportunities for problem-solving when things didn't quite go to plan.

The entire process was evaluated looking at what went well and how the process could be improved next time. The fantastic creations now adorn Year 6 display boards. A special thank you to Mrs Marriner for her wisdom and assistance in creating the adorable Antarctic animals.

Singing Assembly: 'Greatest Day' (Sign2Sing)

Singing assemblies are a wonderful way to promote a feeling of unity and belonging, all of our pupils joining together in song. As a school with a provision for hearing impaired children, it was important for us to support Sign2Sing - an initiative by the Deaf health charity SignHealth. Our pupils learnt the lyrics and sign language to ‘Greatest Day’ by Take That and performed the song beautifully.
