Year 3: Readers' Treat

As a reward for reading three times every week this term, our Year 3 children had an extra Christmas treat today - a hot chocolate and a biscuit.

Well done to all of our children who took part in the Readers' Treat this term. Keep up the hard work and we look forward to planning the next treat in the spring term!

Christmas at Hacton

The Christmas festivities have been in full swing this week! From recording our Christmas concerts, to sharing Christmas dinner together in our Christmas jumpers to Christmas themed activities - we've covered it all!

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and healthy New Year.

Year 1: Christmas Elf

Since the start of December, Hacton has been visited by some mischievous elves. The elves have wrapped our Christmas trees in toilet paper, have swung from the doorways, taped the Mr. Men characters to the whiteboard and have even fed the dinosaurs sweets!

Today, all three of the Year 1 teachers were wrapped up as presents by the troublesome elves! Thankfully, the children were on hand to save the day!

Year 1 and Year 2: Readers' Treat

As a reward for reading three times every week this term, our Year 1 and Year 2 children had an extra Christmas treat. Year 1 had the excitement of a chocolate Santa hunt and Year 2 enjoyed a hot chocolate with a biscuit.

Well done to all of our children who took part in the Readers' Treat this term. Keep up the hard work and we look forward to planning the next treat in the spring term!

Year 2: Poetry

Our Year 2 children have been looking carefully at the book 'Winter Sleep' by Sean Taylor and Alex Morss.

They looked at the front cover which depicted a winter scene where there was snow on the ground and the trees were bare. They then compared this with an illustration at the beginning of the book which showed a summer scene with blossoming flowers and green grass.

We asked the children to write a poem about the comparison of summer and winter using expanded noun phrases, observations, and appropriate vocabulary. They also wrote an acrostic poem about winter showing off their vocabulary skills.

We will be continuing to read the book after Christmas focusing on animals that hibernate and the reasons behind this. Well done Year 2, you are budding poets and we are very proud of you!

Nursery: Elf Hunt

This week, our Nursery children have been reading 'We're going on an Elf Chase'. Under each of the flaps in the book, the children were able to discover where the ten elves were hiding.

Following on from the story, our Nursery children went on their own elf hunt on the school field and in our outdoor area. The elves had chosen some very good hiding places but luckily, we found all ten! As a reward, hiding under a Santa hat, there were some chocolate coins. They were a delicious treat after all that elf hunting!

#WakeUpWednesday

Now more than ever because of the ever-changing technological world that we live in, it is essential that we equip our children with the knowledge and skills to ensure that they know how to use the internet safely.

Each week we will be sharing an age-appropriate guide for parents to share with their child when having conversations about online safety, should they feel it is needed.

This week's guide is about making the most of the online world this Christmas.

Reception: Letters to Santa

This week, Reception have been getting ready for Christmas!

Whilst writing their letters to Santa, the children have been encouraged to listen to and use their phonics skills to sound out the names of the toys on their Christmas list. They have worked really hard on making sure that their list looks neat and beautiful, ready for Santa to read it.

The children have also been working on other Christmas surprises for their family. Keep a look out for the special things coming home soon!

Year 2: Geography

Year 2 have been studying maps this half term. They have shown a good understanding of maps and symbols and can give and follow directional instructions. For our final lesson, the children went on a walk around the school grounds in search of some map symbols. They had to identify these symbols, place them in the correct location on the map and create a key.

Year 2: Forest School

This week at Forest School the children were all given the opportunity to light a fire using a flint and steel. We talked about the elements a fire needs - fuel, oxygen and heat. We also learnt about how to extinguish a fire safely.

The children finished their magic wands and talking sticks and enjoyed further improving their den building and tree climbing skills. We're all very excited for the campfire next week!

E for Effort and WOW! Winners (w/c 6th December)

In order to reward our pupils who have gone above and beyond in their learning each week and put in extra effort, each class teacher chooses one pupil to receive the E for Effort cup and certificate.

Here are this week's winners. Well done - we are very proud of you all!

Achievements of the Week (w/c 6th December)

Congratulations to our Times Table winners this week! These pupils have hopped aboard the Times Table train to continue their journey to becoming a Times Table Champion. They have worked exceptionally hard to learn and master their multiplication and division facts.

Congratulations to our Reading and Poetry Superstrs this week! To achieve this award, all of these children have either read poems or books by their year group authors (Bronze is 5, Silver is 10 and Gold is 15). A big well done to this week's winners who have demonstrated great commitment and dedication to reading.

Our Achievements of the Week winners should be very proud of their success!

Nursery: Letters to Santa

Following on from reading 'Dear Santa', our Nursery children were inspired to write their own letter to Santa sharing what they would like for Christmas this year. They then wrapped up warm and walked their letter to the postbox where they stretched up high to post it themselves!

P-HIC: Literacy

This week, the children in our P-HIC have been writing a set of instructions to make a snowman dreamcatcher. To test out the accuracy of their instructions, the children used their fine motor skills to actually make them! Luckily, everyone's instructions were clear and precise and everyone made a snowman dreamcatcher successfully!

Awesome Attendance Winners (w/c 6th December)

At Hacton, we have introduced a celebration of our attendance. Each week, as part of our assembly, we will announce who the Awesome Attendance winners are. They will get to have our Attendance cup for the week and will be rewarded with a treat in recognition of their fabulous attendance.

Year 6: DT

This half term, Year 6 have been learning about different types of shelters. From bus shelters to bombing shelters, from tents to umbrellas - the children's understanding that a shelter is a means of protection against weather and danger has certainly developed.

Firstly, the children began by investigating the supporting structures around which shelters are made. Next, they investigated which materials would provide the most effective and waterproof protection. Finally, the children spent an afternoon building shelters based upon designs which they had researched.

Trial and error played a large part but they all got there in the end!

Christmas at Hacton: Christingle Making

Christmas songs and the sound of excited children have filled the corridor this week as Christmas officially begins at Hacton! Not only have our Christmas trees gone up, but the first of our Christmas activities have started with the children being invited to make a Christingle at lunchtime.

The children thoroughly enjoyed making their Christingle and know what it represents to Christians.

We hope the children enjoy lighting the candle at home to celebrate the start of Advent.
