Our Key Stage Two councillors and ambassadors were treated to a very special visit to Romford Town Hall to meet Madam Mayor Sue Ospreay and her Chief Support Officer, Ian Piggott. The children were escorted into the main council chamber where they got to sit in the main seats to listen to a speech on democracy and how Havering got its name. They were then treated to the formal ceremony when Madam Mayor entered and were then given the opportunity to ask questions one by one which she answered honestly and openly. Some of the questions were very intriguing asking about her daily work, her key issues for Havering and the charities she supports. Some questions were more personal asking about how she came to be the Mayor as well as asking about her family and views. The pupils were engaged, interested and wowed by the experience.
Following their time in the chamber, we were all then treated to a feast of cake, biscuits and drinks whilst the children (and staff) had their photos taken with Madam Mayor.
The experience was an absolute honour and one of the children said 'This is a privilege being here' after sitting in the formal council chamber and speaking with the Mayor.
Madam Mayor's Chief Support Officer, Ian Piggott said that 'our children were excellently behaved and were a credit to our school.'
It was a fabulous visit and was truly informative and educational for our budding councillors of the future.
