This week in Year 1, the children have been reading and learning about Dame Floella Benjamin and her life story. We shared the book Coming to England which describes Floella's life in Trinidad and how she came to live in England. During the week, they learnt about why people travelled from the Caribbean to England on ships as part of the Windrush Generation and also compared Trinidad to England. As a final task, the children thought about why Floella Benjamin is a significant person, thinking about her achievements and successes throughout her life. The children then drew portraits of Floella before writing some independent sentences about her.
This has been a wonderful, engaging and historic text to cover. Well done, Year 1!
