Year 5 Science: Shadows

November 28, 2025

In Science this week, the children took part in a practical investigation to explore how the Moon orbits the Earth and why shadows change over time. Using torches as the Sun and cubes as the Earth, pupils observed how the position of the light affected the size and direction of a shadow.

They carefully measured the shadow lengths at different angles, recorded their results, and compared what happened as the “Moon” moved around the “Earth”. This helped them understand day and night, phases of the Moon, and why shadows appear longer or shorter depending on where the light source is.
