As part of our Fieldwork and Mapping topic, Year 3 have been investigating whether the grounds of Hacton are bee friendly.
We began by learning about the vital role bees play in our environment and discovered just how many of our favourite foods rely on them for pollination. The children were amazed to find out how empty our supermarket shelves would be without bees – and they were especially shocked to discover that there would be no chocolate!
Inspired by the importance of protecting these incredible pollinators, we carried out a survey of the school grounds to investigate whether Hacton provides the four essential things bees need to survive: food (flowers), water, shelter and sunny areas.
After completing our fieldwork, we returned to the classroom to discuss our findings and identify any features that were missing. The children then used their mapping skills to create maps showing how the school grounds could be improved, suggesting ideas that would help make Hacton an even more welcoming home for bees.
We are looking forward to putting some of these fantastic ideas into action and helping our school become an even more bee friendly environment!
