Year 2: Literacy

March 02, 2025

This week, our Year 2 children have been reading 'Look Up' by Nathan Byron. The children were introduced to the main character Rocket: a girl who wants to be an astronaut just like Mae Jemison, the first African-American to go into space. The story explores how excited she is about an upcoming event called 'The Phoenix Meteor Shower' and the feelings surrounding this spectacular event.

The children were asked to firstly work as a group to compose questions that they would ask Rocket about what she would do at the meteor shower, what she would take and how she was feeling. We then selected children to play the role of Rocket and they were put in the 'hot seat' to take on the role and answer the children's questions.

This was a very successful activity in role-play, building confidence and self-esteem, as well as team work and collaboration as a class which will now feed into our written work.

Well done, Year 2!
