Year 2: Science Club

February 28, 2022
To complete our final session of Science club, the children had the opportunity to make their own lava lamp using materials that they can find at home.

They needed a transparent plastic bottle with a secure lid and then to this we added two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda, one tablespoon of water and 50ml oil. In a cup, we poured 20ml of white vinegar and then added a few drops of food colouring. Using a pipette, the children mixed the vinegar and food colouring together before carefully adding it to the mixture in their bottle. They were amazed by the reaction from the vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and oil and loved seeing the bubbles form and rise in their lava lamps. Some children commented on the 'fizzing' they could hear and they loved the chemical reaction that occurred in front of their eyes!

It was a joy to witness science in action with such simple ingredients! Well done, scientists!
