Year 1: Windmill Trip

March 27, 2026
To enhance the children's learning about life in the past, they went to visit Upminster Windmill for a two hour workshop.

Once there, the children were able to climb up two floors to look carefully at the workings of the mill and how it produced flour to feed the neighbouring towns. They saw the millstones, bells and pulleys and hessian sacks that collected the flour, before coming out of the mill and finding out about life in Upminster two hundred years ago. The children dressed up as Mr and Mrs Nokes, stable hands, maids and farmers to re-enact the roles of life around the mill.

It was a wonderful, first-hand experience for our pupils and we want to thank the volunteers for giving up their time to give our children a fabulous learning experience. The children were, as always, a credit to you and the school and it was commented how well behaved and respectful they were.

The windmill is well worth a family visit for all!
