Hacton 3 - 2 St Mary's

March 25, 2016

The ref blew the whistle and the game was on. The Hacton girls knew what they had to do: deliver the win. Megan kicked off and passed straight to Maddie. Hacton worked hard in the first half and the score remained 0-0 until it was nearly half time. St Mary's took possession and, despite our girls' best efforts, they scored to leave it 1-0 to St Mary's at half time.

The second half brought more exciting opportunities. Midway through the second half, a careless tackle from St Mary's gave Hacton a chance to score. Although the location of the foul was quite a way from the goal, Maddie knew that she had to go for it. She stepped up to take the free kick and everyone willed the ball to land in the back of the net. Unfortunately, it whipped viciously just past the post. Not even 5 more minutes had passed and Hacton had a throw in. This was it, our chance to score. Alex grabbed the opportunity and belted the ball into the bottom corner: 1-1!

With renewed confidence, Maddie charged forward with the ball but was on the receiving end of another careless tackle by St Mary's. This time it was on the edge of the box; surely a penalty. The ref called a free kick. Maddie took the free kick again, this time putting it millimetres passed the post and into the side netting. The final whistle blew. Extra time. St Mary's had the ball and, with Alice and Poppy outrun, it was a one-on-one with our stand in keeper, Lila. Luckily, St Mary's were off target. The whistle blew for the last time and that meant that penalties were the only way to settle this match.

St Mary's took their first penalty... a fantastic save by Lila. Maddie stepped up to take Hacton’s first penalty...  and scored! St Mary's second penalty gave Lila a chance to display her impressive goalkeeping skills again. Hacton’s next penalty was taken by Megan who was unlucky to miss. St Mary's last penalty... they scored. Now all the pressure was on Alex. She kept her cool and took the penalty… Gooooaaaaal! Hacton had won the quarter final and were through to next round.

Fantastic work girls!
