The children of Hacton participated in the UK Parliament Week. Each year group had their own activity to complete and all pupils learnt about the role of Parliament through an engaging and insightful assembly.
In Reception and Year 1, the children learnt some key facts about the Houses of Commons and Lords and the history of Westminster Hall. They took part in some simple voting throughout the week, highlighting how democracy works in practical, fun contexts.
Year 2 learnt about how laws are made and why they are important. They then discussed what laws they thought should be in place and came up with some of their own which they then wrote onto a scroll.
In Year 3, the pupils found it really interesting learning the difference between the UK Parliament and Government, as lots held the misconception that they were the same thing! They had some interesting discussions about the features of both and then wrote down comparisons.
In Year 4, the children held debates on a range of topics and the staff were highly impressed with the oracy skills and maturity in seeing others' points of view.
In Year 5, the children discussed the role of Parliament and enjoyed thinking of the laws that they would like to implement.
Year 6 were lucky enough to receive a visit from the MP for Hornchurch and Upminster, Julia Lopez. She discussed her role in Parliament, how she got the job and what she does on a day to day basis. The children were then given time to ask questions and some of them were very topical indeed, discussing the recent budget, inflation and the future of our country.
Overall, it has been an exciting week and the children have learnt that even though they are young, their voice is important and should be heard.
