E for Effort

Every week, teachers recognise pupils in their class who have made an extra effort. These pupils are presented with the E for Effort cup during our whole school assembly.

Congratulations to all the wonderful children who made an extra effort this week.

Year 1 Visit Barnards Farm

Our Year 1 pupils spent a sunny day looking at over 100 sculptures of all shapes and sizes at Barnards Farm, West Horndon. Linking with their latest curriculum objectives, this was the perfect location to gain a greater understanding of sculpture, materials, trees and flowers. Our pupils looked at the size and scale of sculptures and discussed the materials that they were made from. They also talked about the sculptor's intention when they were creating the amazing artworks. The farm was preparing for an open day so the children were lucky to see some vintage cars too.

Year 1 had a fantastic time at Barnards Farm: they gained a greater insight into the different materials used to make sculptures and they had the freedom to explore an enormous private garden.

We asked the children what they enjoyed most about their day:

"I loved following the maze into a fairy garden."

"I saw a real aeroplane on a runway and I liked the bull made from car parts."

"I loved spending time watching the frogs in the secret garden."

"I liked jumping on the stepping stones in the secret garden."

"The best bit was seeing the rowers."

"I liked running underneath the aeroplane."

Havering Junior Music Festival

After much preparation, our Performing Arts Club pupils had an incredible evening at The Queen's Theatre taking part in the Havering Junior Music Festival. Hacton joined children from other local schools, to put on a musical called 'The Keymaster'. Our pupils very much enjoyed performing, with their favourite song being 'Work Hard', which they have also performed in assembly this week.

Sports Days

Excitement was in the air as both Infant and Junior pupils got ready for the first two Sports Days on our new field, competing for either Ascot, Chepstow, Goodwood or Kempton house.

With more classes and more space, some brand new events joined old favourites this year. First up were the Infants, who circulated around ten events including new additions, the space hopper relay and vortex throw. At the half way point, Ascot were leading the way, with just 7 points separating first and fourth. After the second round, Ascot emerged the victors by just 1 point.

Two days later, our older pupils took to the field. After a carousel of events - in which the sun finally came out to play - Goodwood were leading the pack by 3 points. After some exciting mixed-age relays and a long-distance race to end the day, the final results were in: Goodwood were pipped to the post by Chepstow who, by just one point, are the 2018 champions.

As always, a big thank you to all of the parents and other family members who supported the children, and, most importantly, well done to all of our pupils for their effort, determination and sportsmanship.
